Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) Technical Data Sheet

Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is a lightweight, rigid, closed-cell insulation material manufactured from polystyrene beads
expanded with pentane gas and moulded into blocks or shaped products. It is widely used for thermal insulation,
packaging, and construction applications.

Benefits

  • Lightweight and easy to handle
  • High compressive strength-to-weight ratio
  • Excellent thermal insulation
  • Moisture resistant
  • Cost-effective
  • Recyclable

Thermal Properties

  • Stable long-term thermal performance
  • No CFC's or HCFC's used in production

R-Value

The standard formula is:

Where:

  • R= Thermal resistance (m² •K/W)
  • d= Thickness in meters
  • k= Thermal conductivity of the materials (W/m•K)

Fire Properties

To meet building code requirements, flame
retardant (FR) additives is added during bead
production.

The purpose of the additive is to:

  • Reduce flame spread
  • Promote self-extinguishing behaviour when the ignition source is removed.

Environmental Information

  • 100% recyclable
  • Manufactured using pentane blowing agent
  • Does not contain ozone-depleting substances.

Physical Properties

Chemical Resistance

Resistant to:

  • Water
  • Dilute acids and alkalis
  • Salt solutions

Not resistant to:

  • Organic solvents (gasoline, benzene, acetone)
  • Petroleum-based products

Storage and handling

  • Store flat and protected from UV exposure
  • Keep away from open flame and heat sources
  • Avoid contact with solvents
  • Protect from prolonged sunlight exposure

Common Applications

  • Building insulation (walls, roofs, floors)
  • Concrete formwork
  • Lightweight fill
  • Packaging and protective cushioning
  • Cold storage insulation
  • Structural insulated panels
  • Chilled pipe insulation
  • Custom CNC profiled items
  • Decorative props (Letters and Numbers)
  • Bean bag filling
